STANLEY AUDIO TOUR (English/Japanese/Spanish/German/French)

The tour is the only one of its kind in the Falklands. It is a walking tour using modern hand-held audio "wands" that contain information describing various features of interest on the route. The tour can be selected in 1 of 5 languages and is self-paced giving the visitor full control. There is no guide to keep up with or wait for- the individual user or small group is completely independent and free to go in their own time.

There is a slight elevation half way on this tour (small gently rising slope to 1914 Battle Memorial) however walking should be classed as easy/moderate level.

The tour will take approximately 1 to 2 hours depending on how long is spent at each point along the way. It takes around one hour to walk the route non-stop at a gentle pace and there is approximately 50 minutes of recorded audio text on the audio wand if all 25 tracks are played.

Start/ Finish Point: Landing point the Jetty Visitor’s Centre at the public jetty

StanleyAt the Visitor’s Centre play the introduction and then walk west along Ross Rd commonly known as the ‘front road’, using the map and playing the individually numbered audio tracks which cover the following areas of interest; Jubilee Villas (built in 1887and named to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria), Christchurch Cathedral (built in 1892 to a typically late Victorian English design), Whalebone Arch (these 4 blue whale jawbones were erected as an arch in 1933 to commemorate a century of continous British government), Stanley Cottage (built in 1844 one of the first habitual dwellings to be built in Stanley).

Other points of interest explained are the ship’s names on Wireless Ridge on the other side of the harbour, the SS Great Britain Mast and Cannons on Victory Green. There will be plenty of wildlife to see such as the Upland Geese, southern giant petrels and quite often you will be able to spot the little red passenger plane flying over Stanley or the slightly faster RAF Tornado Fighter Jet!

St Mary’s Catholic Church (this pretty little church was built in 1899), the much frequented Post Office and Philatelic Bureau (housed in the Town Hall which was built in 1950 after the original building burnt down), the Dockyards (an important are within Stanley’s history this being the base from which the new town of Stanley started to grow in 1844/1845).

The walk will then take in Gilbert House, Cable Cottage, Liberation Monument 1982, (the hub of civil labour the Secretariat). Continuing up the front road you will notice the colourful King Edward Memorial Hospital and our well equipped Community School. The Governors house with the impressive garden areas will be a photo stop as will the 1914 Battle Day Monument and the wreck of the Jhellum. You will end at the Britannia House Museum. Return to the Visitors Centre the same way. Play the audio tracks as many times as you like and in any order.

THE MP3 AUDIO TOUR WANDS:

The hand-held wand is a little larger than a television remote control. It has the ability to contain several hours of high quality MP3 audio recordings that are stored as individual tracks. Each track can be played on demand and in any order. The wand has a built-in speaker and does not require headphones, making it safe for outdoor use near traffic. Along with the wand the user receives a map identifying all of the features of the tour. Each feature is numbered on the map and the wand is programmed with the same numbers. The user simply selects the number on the wand that corresponds with the number on the map to hear information about that feature. The wand’s battery can last at least 11 hours without recharging. This means each wand will last all day without having to be taken out of service for recharging.
