Falkland Nature Trek |
This exclusive opportunity to view Falkland birds and flora will depart from the Jetty Visitors Centre heading for the nearby picturesque Hadassa Bay.
The guide will distribute a specially tour specific illustrated checklist and give a general background to Falkland birds and plants and what you might expect to see on this tour (approx 20-30 different bird species).
The group will walk over to the Bay during which visitors will view dark-faced ground-tyrants ( Muscisaxicola macloviana), Falkland thrush (Turdus falcklandii falcklandii), upland geese (Chloephaga picta leucoptera) and the pretty long-tailed meadowlark (Sturnella loyca falklandica). There are also great views of Stanley and the vessel at anchor. At the bay shorebirds such as the Falkland flightless steamer duck (Tachyeres brachypterus) and rock cormorants (Phalacrocorax atriceps albiventer) will be spotted. Looking out to the sea southern giant petrels (Macronectes giganteus) and sooty shearwaters (Puffinus griseus) swoop majestically while there is good chance to see Peale’s dolphins (Lagenorhynchus australis) following tenders back and forth. In this pretty bay Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) burrow in the tussac grass and the black-throated finch (Melanodera melanodera melanodera) should be spotted. Looking back through the entrance to Stanley Harbour there are great views of Stanley to be seen.
Proceeding to Yorke Bay Pond there may be an opportunity to view the internationally rare Botryshium dusenii, locally it is only found on the East Falkland and is considered threatened. On this pond there may be the opportunity to see speckled teal (Anas flavirostris), Magellanic snipe (Gallinago magellanica) and silver teal (Anas versicolor fretensis).
