Falkland Battlefields |
This tour takes in Fitzroy and three Battle Memorials depicting the fierce battle between Argentina and Britain in 1982.
View the mountain battlefield sites where British forces after crossing the hazardous wastes of East Falkland on foot, heavily over laden with equipment fought tough hand to hand battles in conditions reminiscent of the 1st World War to end the forced Argentine occupation of the Islands which took place on April 2nd 1982.
Historically battle rich sites such as Sapper Hill, Mt William, Mt Tumbledown, Mt Harriet and Two Sisters will also be viewed and discussed. Mt Longdon and Wireless Ridge will also be seen at a later stage of the tour.
Our main destination is Fitzroy and Port Pleasant (approx 1hr from Stanley) where the British logistic landing ships Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram were bombed by Argentine Skyhawk aircraft whilst transferring troops ammunition and equipment here on June 8th 1982.
Here you can see memorials for the Welsh Guards and Royal Fleet Auxiliary, also some personal memorials have been constructed on the hillside above. Tragically more than 40 lives were lost here and many others badly injured.
Highlights
Returning to the area of Stanley, if time allows we shall turn west towards Moody Brook where the Royal Marine barracks for the small detachment posted here until 1982 were situated, a small plaque is placed here in recognition of their services.
